A New Race Swag Idea
The Color-Changing Tote Bag
Race directors have plenty of familiar options when planning event swag.
Race shirts and finisher medals are the staples. Some events add hats, socks, drinkware, or a drawstring bag for packet pickup.
But we’ve recently found that another familiar everyday item can be a surprisingly good fit for race swag:
the canvas tote bag.
It’s practical, reusable, easy to manage, and something runners can continue using long after race day — carrying the event brand with them.
More importantly, it gives race directors another creative canvas to turn into something memorable.
Add color-changing technology, and a simple tote can become an experience of its own.
What If the Bag Had a Reveal?
The idea is simple.
Indoors, runners see one version of the artwork. Take the bag outside into sunlight, and hidden elements appear.
That means the indoor and outdoor versions can be designed as two parts of the same story.
Instead of simply putting an event logo on a bag, the reveal can connect directly to the race theme — giving runners a small moment of discovery when they step outside.
We’ve now brought that idea to life for two very different 2026 events.
Monarch Migration Run: One Butterfly Becomes Many
For the 2026 Monarch Migration Run in Norman, Oklahoma, the event theme gave us a natural direction.
Indoors, the tote features a large monarch butterfly and the race name.
Take it into sunlight, and dozens of orange butterflies appear across the background.
The reveal isn’t there just to demonstrate a color-changing effect. It extends the story of the event itself.
One butterfly becomes many — a simple transformation that connects naturally with the monarch migration theme.
Dash of the Titans: Same Idea, Different Experience
For the 2026 Dash of the Titans 5K at Zoo Miami, we approached the tote differently.
Indoors, the bag has a clean look with the Dash of the Titans branding at the center. In sunlight, hidden purple graphics appear across the background.
The same basic technology created a completely different result.
And that’s what makes this direction interesting: the effect isn’t the design. It’s a tool we can use to bring each event’s own identity and ideas to life.
Why This Might Be Worth a Slot in Your Swag Budget
There are some very practical reasons a tote works well for an event.
It works before race day.
A reveal gives the event something real to share. Post the indoor version, tease what happens outside, then show the transformation. Instead of another “Register Now” graphic, there’s something new for runners to notice, react to, and talk about.
No sizes to forecast.
Everyone gets the same bag. No size charts, no guessing how many smalls or mediums you’ll need, and no awkward mix of leftover sizes after the event.
Runners can use it immediately — and keep using it.
A tote can carry packet pickup materials, sponsor items, or other race-day essentials from the moment runners receive it. And unlike packaging that’s discarded after the event, a reusable canvas bag can continue showing up at the grocery store, gym, beach, or around town.
It extends the memory of the event.
The reveal gives runners a moment to discover on race day, while the bag itself gives them something practical to keep afterward. Every time it gets used again, the race goes with it.
That’s an interesting combination: utility, experience, and lasting visibility in one piece of swag.
A Wider Swag Menu
The idea isn’t to replace the race shirt or finisher medal.
It’s simply to widen the menu.
A tote gives race directors another option — especially when they’re looking for something practical that can still feel distinctive to the event.
For Dash of the Titans, for example, the tote was part of a larger interactive swag package alongside a color-changing medal and sweat-activated shirt.
Three different items. Three different interactions. One connected event experience.
That’s where we think race swag becomes much more interesting: not choosing between the traditional and the new, but giving race directors more ways to create something runners haven’t experienced before.
What Could Your Race Swag Do Differently?
Every race has something that makes it its own — a location, a story, a cause, a community, a tradition, or simply a personality runners come back for.
The swag should have the opportunity to reflect that.
Maybe it’s a design that changes in sunlight. Maybe it’s a hidden message revealed through sweat. Maybe it’s a medal that transforms, or an entirely different idea we haven’t created yet.
The product isn’t the starting point.
Your event is.
If you’re looking for a way to make your next race feel more distinctive, give runners something they haven’t experienced before, or simply explore what else race swag could be, tell us about your event. We’ll help turn that story into an interactive swag concept built around it.
