Case Study: Interactive Race Swag at the Shamrock Gold Quest 5K
Summary:
For the 2026 Shamrock Gold Quest 5K, the organizers introduced a new โGold Coin Huntโ element to refresh the event experience. To bring this concept to life, they partnered with Magic Race Swag to create an interactive, color-changing medal and a premium short-sleeved hoodie that physically transform under sunlightโturning race gear itself into part of the quest.

The Challenge: Executing a โGold Coin Huntโ Theme
Every Race Director knows that a theme is only as strong as its execution.
For the upcoming Shamrock Gold Quest 5K & Fun Run (March 14th), organizer Debbie wanted to refresh the event by introducing a new Gold Coin Hunt element on course. Rather than standard swag, she was looking for gear that could directly support the theme and add an element of surprise.
Debbie shared her vision early in the design process:
โWe want to make the medal a gold coinโฆ Iโm also thinking a green lanyard with gold coins on it if possible.
For shirts, can you do a short-sleeved cotton shirt with a hood? Those were VERY popular! Weโd like a black shirt with the gold coin on the frontโฆ maybe the shamrock could come out in the heat or sun?โ
The goal was clear: the swag needed to feel fun, thematic, and unique enough to justify the idea of a โQuest.โ
The Solution: Elevating the Concept with Interactive Design
At Magic Race Swag, the goal was not just to manufacture the gear, but to extend Debbieโs idea using our proprietary Photochromic (sun-activated) technologyโcreating moments of transformation runners could see and feel.
The result was a cohesive medal-and-shirt set designed to surprise runners the moment they stepped outdoors.
1. The Medal: A Gold Coin with a Hidden Twist
The medal followed Debbieโs original concept closely: a classic gold coin shape with a bright metallic finish.
To deepen the Shamrock theme, we added an interactive element.
Indoors, the medal appears clean and gold.
Under sunlight, the shamrock design in the center transforms into a vibrant green, revealing the surprise only once runners step outside.
This subtle transformation reinforced both the St. Patrickโs Day identity and the โquestโ narrativeโmaking the medal feel discovered rather than simply handed out.
2. The Shirt: Reimagining the Short-Sleeved Hoodie
Debbie specifically requested a short-sleeved hoodie, a silhouette that had proven extremely popular with runners in previous events.
We paired that premium cut with a black cotton base and placed a bold gold coin graphic on the front. To differentiate the shirt from the medal, we used a gold/yellow sun-activated ink rather than green.
As runners stand at the start line in the sun, the coin on their chest “lights up” in gold, perfectly matching the “Gold Quest” theme.
The result was a shirt that felt interactive, on-theme, and noticeably different from standard race apparel.
The Result: Swag That Became Part of the Experience
By combining unique apparel and a custom medal with interactive technology, the swag became more than a souvenirโit became part of the eventโs gamification.
The transformation moments sparked conversations, photos, and social sharing both before and after race day. As Debbie said:
โThese are fun! Our racers LOVE your magic shirts!โ
That reaction is exactly what interactive race swag is designed to create: experiences that extend beyond the finish line and continue through social media, group chats, and future registration decisions.
The Takeaway for Race Directors
Runners today increasingly expect items that feel unique, intentional, and worth sharing.
The Shamrock Gold Quest 5K demonstrates that creating a memorable experience doesnโt require a massive budgetโjust a strong theme and gear that supports it. By aligning interactive technology with a clear event concept, the organizers transformed a simple โgold coinโ idea into a dynamic, shareable moment.
The lesson is simple:
Itโs not about adding technology for its own sakeโitโs about using it to reinforce your story.
